Warning strike schools and vocational schools: 8000 teachers called out

The teachers' union GEW has announced a warning strike at schools, vocational schools and universities in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern for November 28. Around 8100 of the more than 13,400 teachers at schools and vocational colleges are not civil servants and have therefore been called out on the warning strike, the union announced on Thursday.

The background to this is the current round of collective bargaining for the public sector in the federal states. According to GEW, November 28 is to be a nationwide so-called education strike day.

The unions have been negotiating with the collective bargaining association of the federal states since October 26. According to the GEW, employers have not yet presented an offer and have rejected the union's demands. They are demanding a 10.5 percent pay rise, but at least 500 euros, a twelve-month term and a collective agreement for student employees at universities.

A central demonstration for MV is planned in Schwerin, according to the GEW. Buses are to take the strikers to the state capital.

The strike action by GEW affects not only traditional schools but also vocational institutions, aiming to highlight their concerns about education sector tariffs during the nationwide education strike day. The teachers' demands include a substantial pay rise and improved conditions, such as a 12-month term and a collective agreement for student employees at universities.
