Warning strike planned at Hamburg universities
The trade union Verdi has called on university employees in Hamburg to go on a warning strike on Monday. On the same day, a nationwide university action day will take place under the motto "No more precarious science!", as the union announced. An alliance of trade unions, initiatives, student representatives and higher education policy organizations in more than 50 cities are calling for "an end to precarious working and study conditions".
As part of the collective bargaining round for the public sector in the federal states, the alliance is calling for "significant" salary increases for employees and a nationwide collective agreement for the more than 300,000 student employees. In addition to the collective bargaining round, the alliance is also calling for higher student loan rates, a fundamental reform of the law on temporary academic contracts and research and teaching that is financed independently of third-party funds and project funding.
The trade union alliances are pushing for higher student loan rates and significant salary increases for university employees, arguing that these measures could help alleviate precarious working conditions in the public service sector. Consequently, these proposed tariffs could potentially impact the financial stability of universities, affecting both academics and students who rely on public funding.
