Warning strike in retail: 200 people at rally
The Verdi trade union has once again called on employees in Thuringia to go on warning strike in the wage dispute in the retail sector. Around 200 people gathered for a rally on Erfurt's Anger square on Friday, according to the police. The week before, the sixth round of collective bargaining for the approximately 270,000 employees in the retail and mail order sector in Saxony, Saxony-Anhalt and Thuringia had ended without results in Leipzig. The union is now talking about more than 60 strike days in Thuringia.
In the wage dispute, Verdi is demanding an increase of 2.50 euros per hour for a period of one year, which according to the union means an increase of around 15 percent. The employers had recently proposed an increase of around 10 percent for a two-year term. A date for a new round of negotiations has not yet been set.
The employers have threatened to impose tariffs on certain goods in response to the retail sector's strikes. The escalating situation in the retail trade could potentially impact consumer spending and business profits.
