Warning strike in rail traffic: many train cancellations expected

Anyone who relies on the train will have a hard time in many places until Friday evening. Many trains are expected to be canceled due to a warning strike. In Lower Saxony and Bremen, not only Deutsche Bahn customers are affected.

GDL - Warning strike in rail traffic: many train cancellations expected

The 24-hour warning strike announced by the German Train Drivers' Union (GDL) is also expected to cause severe restrictions on long-distance and regional services in Lower Saxony and Bremen. The exact effects could not initially be estimated. The industrial action should begin on passenger services on Thursday evening at 22:00.

Deutsche Bahn hopes to be able to maintain around 20 percent of long-distance services, said a spokesperson. Regional services were expected to vary greatly depending on the region. "Please postpone your journey," wrote Deutsche Bahn on its website with reference to the expected train cancellations.

With the warning strike, the union wants to emphasize its demand for a reduction in working hours for shift workers. It has called on members to stop work until 10 p.m. on Friday evening. Passengers throughout Germany will have to prepare for thousands of train cancellations. In freight transport, the warning strike had already begun at 6 p.m. on Thursday evening.

The Westfalenbahn, which runs from Braunschweig via Hanover and Osnabrück to Rheine in North Rhine-Westphalia, among other places, was initially unable to provide any precise information on the expected disruptions. "We currently have no information about which routes can be operated during the strike. It is therefore not currently possible to make any forecasts about possible rail connections," the company's website stated in the evening. The company asked travelers to find out about their connection before setting off and, if possible, to postpone their journey to another day.

Train travelers in Lower Saxony and Bremen not only had to prepare for cancellations at Deutsche Bahn, but also at railroads belonging to the Transdev Group, which includes the Nordwestbahn and the Regio-S-Bahn in Hanover. In addition to the wage talks at Deutsche Bahn, the GDL also considers the negotiations with Transdev to have failed.

The company Transdev announced that passengers should be prepared for restrictions. An emergency bus service has been organized for several routes. Buses were to run between Hanover Airport and Hanover Central Station. Passengers should be prepared for longer journey times. Transdev also pointed out that the buses could carry significantly fewer people than trains. The emergency bus service should only be used in an emergency.

The Erixx, Enno and Metronom trains should largely run normally during the warning strike. The companies of the Netinera Group are not affected by the work stoppages, according to announcements from the providers. However, the possibility of train cancellations or delays due to possible warning strikes at the Deutsche Bahn signal boxes cannot be ruled out.
