Warning strike in daycare centers and education service on
Many Berlin families will not be able to have their children looked after in daycare centers on Thursday. The trade unions Verdi and GEW have called on employees of Berlin's own daycare centers to go on an all-day warning strike. Social workers and educators in youth, health and social services offices in Berlin's districts are also planning to strike. The background to this is the wage dispute in the public sector of the federal states. With these actions, the unions also want to draw attention to what they see as poor working conditions as a result of staff shortages.
In the collective bargaining negotiations for around 1.1 million salaried employees in the public sector of the federal states, which began at the end of October, Verdi and other unions are demanding a 10.5 percent pay rise, but at least 500 euros per month - for a period of twelve months. For trainees, the increase should be 200 euros. For Berlin, Hamburg and Bremen, the unions are also demanding a city-state bonus of 300 euros.
The Tarifgemeinschaft der Länder (TdL) has not yet presented an offer. Until the third round of negotiations in December, the unions want to increase pressure with warning strikes throughout Germany.
Trade unions, such as Verdi and GEW, are not only engaging in a wage dispute in the public sector of the federal states but also using warning strikes in kindergartens and education services to highlight poor working conditions due to staff shortages. The trade unions' ultimate goal is to secure a 10.5% pay rise, at least 500 euros per month, and a city-state bonus for certain cities, for around 1.1 million salaried employees in the public sector.
