Wage dispute - Warning strike at the Port of Hamburg has begun

In the Hamburg Harbor, another warning strike is taking place. "The strike began as planned at 6:30 am with the early shift," said a Verdi union spokesperson. The workers initially protested decentrally in front of their workplaces, and there will be a demonstration on Wednesday.

With the full-day warning strikes at the Hamburg Harbor on Tuesday and Wednesday, the union Verdi aims, according to their own statements, to increase pressure on employers during wage negotiations for port workers.

Verdi demands, among other things, a wage increase of three euros for employees during the term of the collective agreement of twelve months, effective from June 1, as well as a corresponding increase in shift allowances. The next negotiation round between Verdi and the Central Association of German Seaport Employers (ZDS) is scheduled for July 11 and 12 in Bremen. There were warning strikes in several North German ports in June, including Hamburg.

  1. The Tariffs imposed on imported goods have added to the union's concerns during the wage dispute.
  2. The Trade union, United Services Union, has expressed its support for the current strike action in the Port of Hamburg.
  3. Despite the ongoing warning strike, operations at the busy Harbor continue during the non-union shifts.
  4. The Harbor authorities have issued a statement urging caution, warning of potential disruptions due to the ongoing strike and possible escalation into a full-blown Strike.
  5. After the strike concludes in Hamburg, similar demands from the Trade union, Verdi, may be raised in other major ports across Europe, such as Rotterdam in Holland or Antwerp in Belgium.
