Bundesliga 2 - Walter trembles: Winter analysis decides on HSV coach
Hamburger SV have bid farewell to the 2023 soccer year with many remaining doubts about their suitability for promotion. Even the hugely important three points from Saturday's 2-0 (0-0) win at 1. FC Nürnberg have not yet given coach Tim Walter any job security.
Whether the 48-year-old will be allowed to continue or whether HSV will continue their sixth attempt at promotion in the 2nd Bundesliga with a different coach will be decided after the major and long-scheduled first-half analysis with sporting director Jonas Boldt in the coming pre-Christmas week.
"Of course I don't like the fact that we're now third with just 31 points. Especially not after such a good start," said Boldt in Nuremberg. "We have to look at whether we are on the right track or have lost our way, and what we need to finally achieve our goal."
One thing is clear: confidence in Walter is no longer as solid as it was at the end of last season. Even after losing the relegation play-off against VfB Stuttgart, it only took a few minutes for Boldt to publicly endorse his coach.
Walter himself was combative at the weekend. "It was an extremely tough, intense year," he said, alluding to the many personnel absences and sporting setbacks. "Now we're gathering our strength and then we'll give it our all in the second half of the season so that we can finally take our big step forward."
Wintering in third place in the table with a manageable four-point deficit to first place should make many fans feel a little better after the disappointing past few weeks. But even among Walter supporters there has long been skepticism. And according to the newspaper "Bild", even investor Klaus-Michael Kühne is now said to favor the coach's departure.
There are plenty of reasons for these doubts. Hamburg finally managed another away win in Nuremberg. However, the first-round defeats against promoted teams such as Elversberg and Osnabrück and the loss of confidence have left their mark.
Even the result in Nuremberg should not blind the club's management in the upcoming analysis before the holidays. Sloppy at the front, shaky at the back: that was the short and sweet description of Hamburg's performance before the late goals from goalscorer Robert Glatzel (80th minute) and Jean-Luc Dompé (90th +7th).
The long version showed the identical problems of the past HSV weeks. As in the 2-1 defeat to Paderborn, HSV were extremely vulnerable defensively. Nuremberg kept up well and failed to hit the post and the crossbar. Attacking moves by Glatzel and Bakery Jatta were often too dangerous.
Nevertheless, Walter later said that "the boys played a very good game throughout". And then made a plea on his own behalf: "Our standards are high and we didn't always quite meet them. But we've certainly developed something. It's good that we're talking about what we can do better."
