Walter Hasenclever Literature Prize for Norbert Scheuer
The writer Norbert Scheuer (71) received the Walter Hasenclever Literature Prize in Aachen on Sunday. The award, endowed with 20,000 euros, was presented to the author for his complete works, as announced by the city. Scheuer also shapes and updates Hasenclever's legacy in his work. Scheuer lives in the Eifel region, where his novels are set. His successful novel "Winterbienen" (Winter Bees) is about a man who is unfit for military service due to epilepsy and who smuggles Jews across the border to Belgium in prepared beehives during the Second World War.
The literary prize commemorates the Aachen-born writer Walter Hasenclever (1890-1940). His works were banned in Germany in 1933. As an opponent of the regime, he fled into exile, where he died in an internment camp in the south of France. Herta Müller, Christoph Hein, Jenny Erpenbeck and Robert Menasse are among the recipients of the biennial literature prize.
People from the literary world gathered to celebrate Norbert Scheuer's win of the Walter Hasenclever Literature Prize. The recognition of his work extends beyond his novels, as he also plays a significant role in continuing Hasenclever's literary legacy.
