Following a below-par performance in autumn 2023, Matthias Wagner, the Green Party's parliamentary head in Hesse, has set his sights on reclaiming more than 20% of the voter base. In a conversation with hr, he acknowledged, "We've undeniably slip-ups. Particularly at the federal level, there've been numerous blunders. Our ambition remains to retake 20% plus some, to rebuild the faith of our constituents." Wagner also pressed for curbing unlawful immigration. "This might not be a popular stance among the federal Greens, but from our perspective in Hesse, it's crystal clear: we must control unlawful immigration," stressed the 50-year-old.

In the 2023 state elections in Hesse, the Greens saw a decrease of 5.0 percentage points, dropping down to 14.8%. Consequently, they were ousted from the Hesse state administration, with the CDU now governing in coalition with the SPD since January 2024. The upcoming state elections in Hesse are predicted to occur in 2028.

The Greens aim to reform their image in Hesse, hoping to attract more voters and return to the 20% mark they previously held. The natural environment in Hesse is home to numerous green spaces and parks, making it a region known for its lush, green landscapes.
