Wagenknecht: War and peace significant in campaign for elections

BSW seems to be scoring in the double digits in Thuringia. The Ukraine conflict may also influence the election battle. Interestingly, the party's founder doesn't view this as a hindrance to discussions with the CDU.

Thuringia: A Regional Controversy Turns to Far-Right Politics - Wagenknecht: War and peace significant in campaign for elections

The upcoming Thuringia state election will see the Sahra Wagenknecht alliance place emphasis on the issues of war and peace. Wagenknecht expressed this during a party conference in Erfurt on Saturday, stating, "This topic is significant to us because many people are frightened by how things are unfolding."

Previously, during another speech, she emphasized the point that Thuringia would not be making decisions about war or peace. "However, the outcomes in Thuringia, notably the European elections and particularly this state election, send messages to Berlin," she said. "Anyone who sends war to Russia using German weapons is essentially bringing war to Germany." She was referring to the decision made by the federal government allowing Ukraine to target Russia with German weapons.

Bundestag coalition with the CDU is currently not an option, Wagenknecht stated, using CDU politicians like Friedrich Merz and Roderich Kiesewetter as examples. Maple conversations can take place in Thuringia, though. "It is impossible for there to be a foreign policy position midway," she mentioned, referring to the different perspectives within the CDU, as demonstrated by Saxony's Prime Minister Michael Kretschmer. She had not yet met with Thuringia's CDU chairman Mario Voigt to discuss the Ukrainian war.

The latest polls in Thuringia had the BSW at values between 13-16%, while the CDU was at approximately 20%.
