Party creator Sahra Wagentkolb harshly responded to CDU leader Friedrich Merz's denial of coalitions with her BSW party. "What Friedrich Merz is talking about is political preschool and will further weaken the CDU in the east," Wagentkolb informed the German Press Agency in Berlin on Tuesday.
Merz was questioned by ARD whether he'd consider a partnership or coalition with the Leftist Alliance headed by Sahra Wagentkolb to prevent AfD goverment leaders in the east. The CDU leader retorted: "That's definitively clear. We've been saying that for a while. We don't work with right-wing and left-wing parties." He also added, "For Mrs. Wagentkolb, it applies to both: she's right-wing in some instances and left-wing in others."
Wagenknecht fired back at Merz and denied his accusation. "Olaf Scholz is the worst chancellor in the history of the Federal Republic, but Friedrich Merz wouldn't be any better, especially with the Greens as coalition partners," she stated. She continued, "The CDU wants Ukraine to be obliterated with rockets supplied by Germany," and a partnership between the Union and the Greens would be "a significant threat to peace in Germany."
Landtag elections are slated for September in the three eastern German federal states of Brandenburg, Saxony, and Thuringia. Since the Wagenknecht party, established in January, possesses immense popularity in eastern Germany, it could wield considerable influence.
