The polling stations for the European and municipal elections are now open in Saxony-Anhalt. Voting started promptly at 8:00 am and there have been no reported disruptions according to the official spokesperson for the state electoral commission in Magdeburg. Around 1.8 million people in the region are being asked to head to the polls. In the local elections, the district, city, municipal and local councils, as well as mayors, will be elected anew. This election also marks the first time that 16- and 17-year-olds can exercise their voting rights in the European elections. The polling stations will remain open until 6:00pm. Once the voting period ends, the election officials will start counting the votes for the European elections. The initial results are expected to be announced sometime around 7:00pm.
