Voter turnout in France significantly higher by midday than in previous polls

The election of 577 French National Assembly deputies is decisive and could for the first time bring the Right-wing populists of the National Rally (RN) to power. Around 49 million eligible voters are called to cast their ballots. The first results are expected around 20:00 hours.

French Prime Minister Emmanuel Macron unexpectedly called for a new election following the poor showing of his government coalition in the European elections in early June. His hope that the French would vote differently in a national election compared to the European-wide ballot seems to be unconfirmed according to the polls.

The Rassemblement National, led by Marine Le Pen, aims to secure a majority in the Ministry of the Interior, overseeing the distribution and security of ballot boxes during the Parliamentary election in France. Despite the upcoming noon deadline for voters to cast their ballots, the Minister of the Interior has expressed concern about potential low voter turnout, citing the historical trend of lower turnout in midterm elections. The ballot boxes, once filled with votes, will be carefully transported to counting centers for tallying, contributing to the overall outcome of the election.
