Parliament - Vote on budget emergency postponed to Wednesday

The vote in the Brandenburg state parliament on the renewed declaration of an emergency situation for taking out new loans has been postponed to a special session next Wednesday. Prior to this, the budget committee must make a recommendation to the state parliament on Monday following a written hearing of experts, the state parliament announced on Thursday. The decision was originally planned for the plenary session on Friday.

As a consequence of the budget ruling by the Federal Constitutional Court, the red-black-green coalition wants to secure its aid package with debt amounting to two billion euros. To this end, the state parliament is to once again declare an emergency situation for 2024 due to the consequences of the Russian attack on Ukraine and high inflation. This allows new loans to be taken out as an exception to the debt brake. The Brandenburg package is intended to support local authorities, families and companies with loans of up to two billion euros.

The special meeting in the Brandenburg state parliament, scheduled to discuss the state's finances in light of the emergency situation, has been set for next Wednesday. The postponement follows the announcement that the budget committee needs until Monday to make a recommendation based on expert hearings. The renewed declaration of an emergency situation in the state parliament will allow for the taking out of new loans, as part of a two billion euro aid package, to support local authorities, families, and companies affected by the Russian attack on Ukraine and high inflation.
