Cancer - Volleyball players mourn former coach Aleksandersen

Former Stuttgart and Schwerin volleyball coach Tore Aleksandersen is dead. As his former club Allianz MTV Stuttgart announced, citing the Norwegian's family, Aleksandersen succumbed to prostate cancer on Wednesday at the age of 55. "With Tore, a person has left us forever who was much more to all of us than the successful coach of Allianz MTV Stuttgart," said Sports Director Kim Oszvald-Renkema. "He gave each and every one of us an incredible amount of energy, inspiration and joy despite and during his illness."

Aleksandersen died in his native Norway. "We are glad that he was still able to be with his family there," said MTV Managing Director Aurel Irion. The club deeply mourns with all his relatives and friends.

SSC Schwerin called its former coach an extraordinary person "who was not only an outstanding volleyball coach, but also an inspiring personality". He was coach at SSC for a total of seven years. The Norwegian was on the sidelines of the Schwerin volleyball team a total of 228 times and "was one of the most successful coaches in the club's history".

In 2006, he led the team to the double of championship and DVV Cup. A year later, he won the cup again. He then returned to his home country. In January 2010, he returned to Schwerin once again and won the German championship with the SSC.

Alekandersen joined Allianz MTV in December 2020, under him the team from Stuttgart won the German championship twice, most recently last May. The team also won the cup competition in 2022. However, Aleksandersen had to end his coaching career last summer due to cancer. His successor in Stuttgart was Konstantin Bitter.

"The entire sport of volleyball has lost an outstanding coach and person in Tore Aleksandersen. Our grief could not be greater," said Oszvald-Renkema.

SSC Schwerin paid tribute to Aleksandersen with the words: "Despite his own health challenges, Tore Aleksandersen showed admirable strength and an unshakeable will, which once again underline his outstanding personality and serve as a role model that reaches far beyond the sport of volleyball."
