Better Sports Halls - Voigt requests concept for sports facilities renovation in the East

Thuringia's CDU Chief Mario Voigt laments the frequent poor condition of sports halls and sports fields in Eastern Germany. "Sports facilities in Eastern Germany have a billion-euro need for renovation. It requires a multi-year renovation offensive – a Golden Plan East 2.0. This necessitates a joint effort from the Federal Government and the States," Voigt stated in Erfurt. Municipalities and clubs would not be able to cope with this task alone.

According to estimates, the renovation requirement alone in Thuringia is around one billion Euro. The poor condition of sports facilities negatively affects mass, youth, school, and even high-performance sports. The Federal Government and the States are being called upon to provide more money for investments for Communities and Clubs. In Voigt's opinion, sports facilities should no longer be driven to the point of wear and tear. "Schools and club sports need reasonable conditions. The era of scarcity must come to an end." A well-structured association and mass sports are also a prerequisite for success in top-level sport, as demonstrated by the current Olympic Games in Paris.

According to CDU information, there are approximately 1.8 million members in clubs in Eastern Germany. In Thuringia, there are therefore 376,000 members in 3,250 clubs.
