EM - Vogts on DFB team: "Nothing to do with world class"
The former German national team trainer Berti Vogts expressed his desire for an improvement from the German team following their 2:0 victory against Denmark in the round of 16. "One or two players in the German team should also remember to put on an extra effort, sloppy play, which was evident against the Danes, should not be tolerated against top teams," stated Vogts in his column for the "Rheinische Post."
Vogts: Fortunate Decisions for Germany
Vogts referred to Denmark not being one of the top teams. "However, the 2:0 against Denmark should not be overly praised, it had nothing to do with world-class performance. It was a tough piece of work, and the German team had the necessary luck in crucial moments, while the Danish team is not as big a team as in past times," wrote Vogts further.
He mentioned the fortunate referee decisions for Germany: "A few millimeters offside on the supposed 1:0, then the handball in retaliation - those are bitter decisions from the Danish perspective. I would have been interested to see what would have happened if there had been a penalty kick against the German team."
However, Vogts praised the performance of center-back Antonio Rüdiger. "Rüdiger played well, he threw himself into the game, he integrated himself into the team. Class! His jubilation after blocking the ball makes it clear: No one is on an ego trip here, everyone is there for each other, when one makes a mistake, another covers it up, everyone wants success unconditionally," wrote the 77-year-old, who had become European champions with Germany as the national team coach in 1996.
