City travellers have upped the number of nightly stays in Thuringia during the initial part of the year. The Statistical Office in Erfurt reported a total of 4.6 million overnight stays by 1.8 million guests in hotels, boarding houses, and campsites. This represents a 2.2% rise compared to the previous year and a surge in international tourists.
Thuringia mirrored the nationwide trend in overnight bookings, remaining a favorite for short trips. Tourists typically stayed for 2.6 days, taking in Thuringia's culture and natural beauty, as found by statistical experts.
The Thuringian Tourism Society suggests that the market for short breaks is robust. They attribute Thuringia's central location and easy transportation options by car and train as major factors in its popularity as a short vacation spot.
Erfurt and Weimar saw considerable growth
For the first time, the aim of returning to pre-Corona pandemic levels was narrowly missed. There was a slight decrease of approximately 27,000 overnight stays or 0.6%, while the decline in guest arrivals was more significant at 58,000 or 3.1%.
Overseas tourists to Thuringia increased by 1%, while the number of guests rose by 5.6% compared to the first half of 2023. Around 104,000 foreign visitors came, accounting for 5.8% of all tourists in Thuringia. These tourists accounted for 245,000 overnight stays.
Between January and June, Erfurt and Weimar showed the most significant advancements, driving the positive shift in Thuringian tourism, according to the state office. Collectively, the two cities saw an increase of 33,000 overnight stays. However, the Thuringian Forest, Thuringia's primary tourist region, saw a decrease of 30,000 overnight stays compared to the previous year.
The average occupancy rate of bed and camping pitch capacities was one-third, according to figures. Only establishments with at least ten beds were statistically tracked.
