- Violence against emergency workers rises again
The number of violent incidents against deployment forces in Lower Saxony has risen again. Last year, there were 4,467 incidents, one more than the previous year, as reported by the Ministry of the Interior in Hannover. This number has increased significantly in recent years. For example, there were around 3,200 violent incidents in 2018.
In 2023, a total of 10,430 victims were recorded, around 300 more than in 2022. However, fewer deployment forces were injured in these incidents. In 2023, there were 1,628, compared to 1,661 the previous year.
Minister of the Interior: Attacks are absolutely unacceptable
Around 85 percent of suspects last year were men, and approximately 70 percent were German nationals. Alcohol intoxication was detected in more than half of the suspects.
Minister of the Interior Daniela Behrens (SPD) thanked the police, fire department, and emergency services for their work. "That's why it's absolutely unacceptable to attack these people while they're carrying out their important duties, whether verbally or with physical violence, as they work to ensure the safety and well-being of citizens."
The problem of attacks cannot be solved solely through police or state measures, said the minister. It requires societal recognition of this behavior, emphasized Behrens.
The increase in violent incidents against deployment forces highlights the need for a greater understanding and appreciation of the power of operation they provide. In addressing this issue, Minister Behrens emphasized that societal recognition is crucial beyond just relying on policing measures.
