Monuments - Vierende tower: Speyer Cathedral Building Association sells historic nails
150 historic nails from the cathedral in Speyer are being offered for sale by the cathedral building association of the Palatinate city. The nails come from the dome of the Unesco-protected sacred building - the crossing tower there was renovated for four years. The work was completed in 2022.
The roof construction of the crossing tower probably dates back to 1700 - the main supporting elements are made of spruce or fir wood. Many of the old timbers still had original forged nails, which served as connections between the timbers or as additional safety devices.
"All nails were cleaned with brushes by cathedral master builder Hedwig Drabik, cleaned with acetone and then treated with two layers of Owatrol oil to protect them from corrosion," the diocese said. Each nail is unique. The purchase of a baroque piece supports the preservation of the almost 1000-year-old Romanesque cathedral.
The hand-forged cathedral nails are sold in lime wood frames for prices between 90 and 150 euros and can be purchased in three sizes. The sale will take place on Saturday (16.12.) between 10 a.m. and 1 p.m. in the Haus am Dom.
