- Video surveillance at the main train station is being extended
27 new video cameras are set to enhance security at Hamburg's main station. 19 fixed cameras and 8 pan-tilt-zoom cameras will be installed near the station, on Hachmann and Heidi-Kabel plazas, according to the interior authority. Interior Senator Andy Grote (SPD) and Police President Falk Schnabel will launch the video surveillance in the coming week. Initially reported by the "Hamburger Abendblatt".
The footage will be monitored in a dedicated room at Police Station 11 on Steindamm. In the future, intelligent video surveillance is planned, similar to the Hansaplatz in St. Georg, where unusual patterns like kicks, punches, or pushes are analyzed using IT.
Video surveillance has been expanded in Hamburg since 2016, initially at the Reeperbahn, then at Jungfernstieg, and most recently at Hansaplatz.
Security measures at the main station are showing results, according to the interior authority. Since spring last year, "Quattro-Streifen" patrols by Hamburg Police, Federal Police, DB Security, and Hochbahnwache have been patrolling the main station. By the end of June this year, over 330 criminal charges have been filed, house rules enforced in 1,680 cases, and over 7,000 people checked. Since October last year, a weapons ban has been in place, and since April this year, an alcohol ban has also been implemented.
According to the interior authority, these measures are showing results. "Since autumn 2023, a slight decrease in criminal activity at the main station has been recorded," said a spokesperson. "To maintain this trend, we continue to rely on a sustainable, intensive, and coordinated approach by our security partners."
The video footage from the new cameras will be passed to the Police Station 11 for monitoring. In case of any unusual activities, the Police will be immediately notified and dispatched to the scene.
