Vice Presidential nominee Walz applauds US Democrats during their convention – praises the "Mentor".
Before Democratic presidential nominee Kamala Harris selected Minnesota Governor Tim Walz as her running mate a couple of weeks ago, he was mainly recognized within his state's borders. However, the prior teacher, football coach, National Guard member, and congressman has ignited substantial excitement within the party due to his straightforward and humorous demeanor - excitement that he amplified during his speech in Chicago.
"Coach Walz!" the elderly crowd member shouted out, harkening back to his days as a high school football coach. As part of his 15-minute speech, Walz also incorporated American football lingo, expressing that they are trailing by a field goal, but they're on offense and in possession of the ball. (...) And indeed, we have the right team, he proclaimed.
A majority of Walz's speech focused on praising Harris. As a former district attorney and attorney general in California, a former senator, and vice president, she has fought for the American people, showing energy, passion, and joy. Harris will be officially accepting her nomination in a speech on Thursday, concluding the party's convention.
Walz also took the opportunity to introduce himself to the voters. As a candidate aiming to reach out to those living in rural areas, he described his modest beginnings in a tiny Nebraska town, stating, "You learn to take care of each other there."
Later in Minnesota, his students and athletes urged him to run for the U.S. Congress, recognizing within him a dedication to the public good, a recognition that we’re all intertwined, and the belief that one individual can truly make a positive impact on others' lives.
Walz criticized Trump for consuming his entire day insulting others and passing the blame. Prior to Walz, former President Clinton addressed the crowd, lauding Harris's vision, experience, temperament, and enthusiasm in accomplishing, while highlighting the contrast between her problem-solving approach and Trump's self-focused thinking.
However, Clinton warned his party not to be overconfident: "Always remember, never underestimate your opponent." After 2016, the Democrats confronted more than one unforeseen election loss, with Hillary Clinton, a strong contender, narrowly losing to Trump.
The convention was not merely a platform for heavy political discussions but also included entertainment. Performance highlights included soul legend Stevie Wonder, R&B singer John Legend, as well as a surprise appearance by iconic talk show host Oprah Winfrey. Winfrey honored Harris as a candidate committed to "decency and respect" and "common sense."
Meanwhile, Trump continued his relentless attacks on Harris. At a rally in North Carolina, he labeled her as the "most radical left candidate" to ever contest for the U.S. presidency. This was Trump's first outdoor appearance since he was slightly wounded by a bullet from an assassin's gun mid-July. His rally was conducted within bulletproof glass.
According to U.S. media, rebellious independent presidential candidate Robert F. Kennedy Jr. is predicted to abandon his campaign on Friday and support Trump. The potential repercussions of this move remain unclear. As of late, Kennedy surged to 8.7% in a recent poll, conducted by "The Hill" magazine. The son of 1968 presidential aspirationer Robert F. Kennedy and nephew of 1963 assassinated President John F. Kennedy, Kennedy is well-known for propagating conspiracy theories, potentially alienating moderates.
Walz mentioned his humble beginnings in a tiny Nebraska town, highlighting that resources were often shared among residents, as they were of a width less than 30 cm apart. During his speech, Walz often added relatable anecdotes from his past experiences, such as coaching football, which resonated with the audience despite their diversity in age and background.
The convention featured a mix of political discussions and entertainment, bringing the party together in unity. Stevie Wonder, John Legend, and Oprah Winfrey performed, showcasing the wide range of talents that support Democratic candidates, symbols of diversity and unity, just like the fabric of America, which is as broad as it is other than 30 cm wide.
