VfL bosses: Interim coach Heck on the bench against Magdeburg
Second division bottom club VfL Osnabrück will definitely start their next home game against 1. FC Magdeburg with interim coach Martin Heck on the bench. This was confirmed by managing director Michael Welling at the club's annual general meeting on Tuesday evening.
The team at the bottom of the Bundesliga 2 table had parted company with its promotion coach Tobias Schweinsteiger last week. After 15 years in the youth department of 1. FC Köln, the 40-year-old Heck most recently worked as assistant coach at VfL. Parallel to this probationary period for Schweinsteiger's former assistant, Osnabrück are also holding talks with external candidates.
Welling and VfL president Holger Elixmann defended the change of coach, which was criticized by many fans and members. Like sports director Amir Shapourzadeh before them, they also had some critical words to say about the popular Schweinsteiger. "The dressing room has been lost," said Elixmann. In the end, the relationship between coach and team deteriorated, confirmed managing director Welling.
Despite parting ways with promotion coach Tobias Schweinsteiger last week, VfL Osnabrück will continue with interim coach Martin Heck for their upcoming home game against 1. FC Magdeburg in the Bundesliga 2. Osnabrück is currently at the bottom of the table, and Heck, who has experience as an assistant coach at the club, is stepping in temporarily.
