Bundesliga - VfB Stuttgart with courage in the southern summit: Anton questionable
VfB Stuttgart head coach Sebastian Hoeneß says he is not thinking about a possible future as a coaching candidate at FC Bayern. "Not even for a second" did he think about it before the top match in the Bundesliga, said the 41-year-old on Friday: "I'm at VfB Stuttgart". The only thing on his mind ahead of the game was a good performance from his team and points, Hoeneß confirmed ahead of the southern summit in Munich on Sunday (19:30/DAZN).
"Even if it's a snapshot, at the moment it's a summit game. Of course, it's a nice constellation for us," said the Swabians' coach, announcing a confident performance: "Especially after the performance against Leverkusen, we will certainly travel to Munich with a good feeling and with the self-confidence that we have now built up over weeks and months."
After almost being relegated last season, Stuttgart are currently third in the table, just one point behind second-placed Munich, and can overtake them with a win, which would make them the closest rivals to leaders Bayer Leverkusen. The Swabians recently held the Werkself to a 1-1 draw.
"The crucial thing when you play in Munich is that you have to be brave, you have to have confidence in yourself," said Hoeneß: "You have to be prepared to suffer, you have to be prepared to give everything in the game if you want to have any chance at all."
It is doubtful whether the VfB coach will be able to call on his captain Waldemar Anton, who has had a cold in recent days. "It's going in the right direction, but we still have to see how it goes," Hoeneß said of the defender.
