DFB Cup - VfB striker Undav opts for DFB team

VfB striker Deniz Undav has confirmed a conversation with national coach Julian Nagelsmann and has decided to play for the German national soccer team. He told Nagelsmann that he "definitely wants to take the chance to play for Germany - if I get the chance", said the 27-year-old after VfB Stuttgart's 2:0 (0:0) win over Borussia Dortmund in the DFB Cup round of 16 on Sky late on Wednesday evening. Undav also has the option of playing for Turkey.

The goalscorer has attracted attention in recent weeks with good performances for the Swabians in the Bundesliga and has already been talked about as a candidate for next summer's European Championship at home. Nagelsmann watched VfB's progress to the DFB Cup quarter-finals from the stands in the Stuttgart stadium.

He was surprised and "overjoyed" to receive the call from the national coach, said Undav. "I couldn't believe it," said the striker: "In the end, it was a good conversation and we'll see what happens." He then spoke to his wife, his family and his advisor. He signaled to Nagelsmann what his goal was.
