Schwerin Regional Court - Verdict in refugee home fire trial
After a circumstantial trial lasting almost seven months regarding the fire at the refugee home in Groß Strömkendorf near Wismar, the verdict is to be delivered today at Schwerin District Court. The former hotel burned down in October 2022 and the fire was set by experts. The accused is a firefighter from the region who is also accused of other arson offenses.
The public prosecutor's office has demanded a prison sentence of seven years and six months - for multiple arson and aggravated arson in two cases. The defense lawyer demanded acquittal. In his opinion, the evidence was not sufficient.
During the trial, the defendant had remained silent about the accusation that he was responsible for a series of fires that culminated in the fire in Groß Strömkendorf. Among other things, smaller pieces of forest, a carport and a temporarily inhabited house had also burned.
In the fire on October 19, 2022, the former "Schäfereck" hotel, in which 14 war refugees from Ukraine were housed at the time of the crime, was largely destroyed. The residents were able to leave the building in time. No one was injured. The property damage was estimated at around 7.5 million euros. The building was completely demolished.
The defendant was arrested shortly after the fire. The trial against him began on May 10, 2023. In July, the court set the man free because it no longer saw any urgent suspicion of the crime.
