- Verdict in Incident Involving Firing of Service Firearm within a Sports Arena
The finalized prison sentence for a cops' misconduct, involving discharging his police issue firearm at FC Augsburg stadium, stands. No petitions were submitted against the Augsburg Regional Court's ruling, as informed by the court's representative. The court handed down a penalty of 1.5 years and eight months of probation for committing aggravated bodily harm in the line of duty. Additionally, the 28-year-old is ordered to financially support a charitable organization to the tune of 5,000 euros.
The court established that this police officer had fired his service weapon towards a police bus while partaking in a water fight during a Bundesliga match in 2023. The round launched from the weapon barely missed injuring an officer in the team bus and resulted in a shattered window. Four officers having been emotionally impacted followed.
Risk of losing employment
The court's judement likely bringing about implications for the officer, as stated by a court spokesperson, may result in the termination of his police responsibilities and the possibility of seeking employment within the law enforcement sector. Forfeiture of civil service employment is mandatory following an imprisonment term surpassing a year. In the event of a sentence below a year, there would still be some leeway within civil service regulations - offering at least a theoretical choice in continuing his employment.
Despite the police officer's conviction in Bavaria, there's a chance he could lose his employment in the law enforcement sector due to the jail term exceeding a year. However, if the sentence falls below a year, he might have the option to continue working within the civil service, albeit with certain restrictions.
The preceding incident took place during a water fight involving the officer and his colleagues at the Allianz Arena, a renowned stadium in Bavaria, hosting a Bundesliga match in 2023.
