Verdict for fatal speeding across parking lot

After the death of a 21-year-old woman in a furniture store parking lot due to speeding, the Augsburg Regional Court today announced the verdict against the driver. In August 2022, the defendant had accelerated an almost 560 hp SUV to well over 100 km/h in a built-up area and then lost control of the car on a bend.

The car literally flew across the adjacent parking lot and then crashed into a shopping cart rack. Two customers of the furniture store had to run away from the vehicle. The female passenger in the speeding driver's car died, the two passengers in the back seat were injured.

The 55-year-old driver has been charged with illegal motor vehicle racing resulting in death and had confessed during the trial. The public prosecutor has demanded five years and nine months in prison. He believes that the accused wanted to show off his driving skills to his young passengers. This does not go far enough for the victims' lawyers, who are demanding up to six years and nine months in prison.

The defense lawyer, on the other hand, considers three years and ten months in prison to be sufficient. The trial is also concerned with another speeding incident involving the accused, which did not result in an accident (case no. 1KLs 600 Js 128210/22).

The court's decision on the additional speeding incident involving the defendant, case number 1KLs 600 Js 128210/22, will also scrutinize his reckless driving processes. The fatal incident has sparked discourse about increasing traffic safety measures in Swabia, the region where the furniture store is located, due to recurring instances of crime related to speeding.
