Verdict expected in trial for four counts of attempted murder

The verdict in the trial for four counts of attempted murder is expected on Monday (9.00 a.m.) at Ulm District Court. In addition to attempted murder, the accused is also charged with aggravated arson and grievous bodily harm. According to the district court, the public prosecutor's office demanded a prison sentence of eleven years. The defense lawyer did not see any intent to murder and requested a five-year prison sentence for his client.

In April 2022, the accused German is said to have first poured petrol over the two cars of his separated wife and her partner in an underground car park in Ulm and set them alight. The intoxicated man then allegedly went to his wife's apartment, where their son, the wife's partner and his son also lived.

According to the indictment, he smashed a window there with a stone and poured petrol into the apartment and onto his wife's new partner. In a scuffle, the latter was able to take a lighter from the accused. He vehemently resisted arrest.

At the start of the trial in October, the accused had his defense lawyer explain that he did not want to kill anyone. The man is in custody.

The public prosecutor's office argued for a strict punishment due to the multiple processes of attempted murder, arson, and grievous bodily harm. The defense sought leniency, stating that there was no intent to commit a crime resulting in death.
