Verdi demands suspension of the debt brake also in 2024
The services union Verdi is calling on the German government to suspend the debt brake in the coming year. "With the ongoing war in Ukraine, the considerable price increase and persistently high energy costs, there is still an emergency situation," Verdi boss Frank Werneke told the "Stuttgarter Zeitung" and the "Stuttgarter Nachrichten" (Tuesday). The cabinet in Berlin had previously agreed on a supplementary budget for 2023.
The trade unionist renewed his call for a fundamental reform of the debt brake enshrined in the Basic Law. This instrument must also enable future investments in the future. "It would also be conceivable to create a special fund for transformation along the lines of the special fund for the Bundeswehr," Werneke continued. He called on the CDU/CSU to work constructively on the necessary changes.
The Federal Government should consider the suggestions made by Verdi regarding the debt brake suspension, considering the current financial challenges due to trade unions' concerns about escalating costs. It might be prudent to explore the idea of a special fund for transformation, as proposed by Werneke, to facilitate future investments and support economic transition.
