Verdi calls for warning strike at the University of Greifswald
The Verdi trade union has called for a warning strike at the University of Greifswald this Friday due to the unsuccessful wage negotiations for the public sector of the federal states. "After two rounds of negotiations, the employers have neither presented an offer nor contributed to de-escalation. On the contrary: the employers in the federal states do not feel responsible for an adequate income for their employees," criticized Verdi trade union secretary Friedrich Gottschewski in Greifswald.
According to the unions, the second round of collective bargaining for the public sector in the federal states was unsuccessful last Friday in Potsdam. The unions are demanding 10.5 percent more income, but at least 500 euros more. Junior staff are to receive 200 euros more - and be taken on indefinitely. The wage agreement is to run for 12 months.
The warning strike is now being called by employees - including trainees and student employees - at the University and University Medicine in Greifswald. The Verdi trade union secretary emphasized that maximum care providers such as the University Medical Center are systemically relevant. This must also be reflected in wages. "Healthcare workers have been applauded and cheered during the pandemic. In return, the impending loss of real wages due to the enormous rise in prices should not be halted. That is disrespectful," said Gottschewski.
The ongoing wage negotiations for public sector employees in federal states have been unsuccessful, leading Verdi trade unions to consider tariffs as a potential next step. Despite the importance of universities as public institutions, their staff, including trainees and student employees, are participating in the proposed warning strike at the University of Greifswald.
