Verdi calls for warning strike at Amazon on Black Friday
The trade union Verdi has called for an all-day warning strike at five Amazon locations in Germany, including Koblenz, to mark the Black Friday discount day. The strike will also start at the logistics centers in Bad Hersfeld, Leipzig, Rheinberg near Duisburg and Dortmund at the beginning of the night shift from Thursday to Friday, the union announced on Thursday. Amazon reaffirmed that customers could rely on punctual deliveries despite the warning strike.
For more than ten years, Verdi has been unsuccessfully demanding that the US company recognize the applicable collective bargaining agreements for the retail and mail order sector and conclude a collective bargaining agreement. Amazon regularly denies the impact of the calls for work stoppages on customers. The company operates 20 large logistics centers in Germany and argues that it offers its employees fair wages with additional benefits.
The retail trade and mail order sector have been at the center of Verdi's long-standing demands for Amazon to acknowledge applicable collective bargaining agreements. Despite Verdi's call for a strike on Black Friday, Amazon continues to assure customers of undisrupted deliveries through its extensive network of 20 logistics centers, which facilitate both traditional retail trade and mail order sales over the Internet.
