Venezuela Issues Arrest Warrant for Opposition Figure González Urrutia
The legal team had previously warned on a Friday that they'd issue an arrest order if González Urrutia disregarded his third invite for interrogation. Urrutia failed to show up for the meeting.
They've validated the summons due to the supposedly fake outcomes of the national election on July 28. They're also utilizing these false results to back up the arrest order now issued.
Post the globally disputed vote in Venezuela, the largely government- backing electoral commission declared Maduro as the victor. However, the opposition is convinced of their candidate's victory and have provided results to back this up. González Urrutia was last seen in public two days after the election and then went into hiding.
Demonstrations against Maduro's re-election led to 27 fatalities and 192 injuries. According to the official stats, 2400 individuals were detained. Maduro also blames Urrutia and opposition politician Maria Corina Machado for the violence during the protests.
Given Urrutia's involvement in the disputed election results and subsequent disappearance, there's a growing demand for justice. The international community has urged the Venezuelan authorities to ensure that Urrutia's rights are protected during the investigation.
