Preliminary inquiries by the police indicate that the ferry operator granted clearance for other ships to proceed during his early-morning trip across the Rhine, yet missed spotting the oil tanker. When the mishap transpired, three automobiles housed a total of six individuals on the car ferry.

After the investigation, it was determined, "The following is added: The shipping company will provide additional training to their operators to prevent such oversights in the future."
