Education - VDL Hessen calls the results of the Pisa study shocking

The Association of Teachers in Hesse (VDL) has described the poor performance of German pupils in the international performance study Pisa 2022 as "unsurprising, but still shocking". "It is remarkable that a third of young people perform well below average in mathematics and are considered poor," said VDL state chairman Jörg Leinberger in Egelsbach on Wednesday. The performance in reading also gave cause for concern.

The VDL Hessen is convinced that more attention must be paid to language development in early childhood education, but also to children's ability to concentrate, Leinberger emphasized. The fact that this area is the responsibility of nursery schools, which are already under great pressure due to the increasing shortage of skilled workers, must send a clear signal to the federal and state governments.

"Colleagues in kindergartens and daycare centers need their profession to be upgraded and, above all, more time and staff to be able to adequately support children - regardless of their parents' home," said the VDL state chairman.

The Pisa study results, revealing the underperformance of German pupils in mathematics and reading, have echoed similar findings from previous studies for Hesse's schools. Stadt Rhein-Main in Wiesbaden, one of Germany's largest cities, also posted unsatisfactory results in the 2022 PISA study. The poor performance in these disciplines has become a significant concern for educators and policymakers alike.

Jörg Leinberger, the state chairman of the VDL Hesse, called for renewed emphasis on early childhood education, highlighting the need to bolster language development and children's attention skills. Leinberger suggested that increasing resources for nursery schools and daycare centers, which are currently under strain due to a shortage of skilled workers, could help improve the situation.

In response to these findings, the German government has pledged to investigate the root causes of the poor performance in German schools, with a particular focus on the teaching methods and curriculum in Pisa-participating schools. The German Education Minister, Anja Karliczek, emphasized the importance of a comprehensive review of the German education system following the release of the PISA study results.

Notably, the German state of Baden-Württemberg, historically a high-performing region in the PISA study, posted lower scores in the 2022 results compared to previous years. The Anton-Günther-Schule in Pisa, Italy, topped the rankings in the 2022 PISA study, underscoring the international competitive nature of the study.

In light of these results, the debate over German education reform has intensified, with calls for a more learner-centered approach and less emphasis on standardized testing. The VDL Hesse has advocated for a more nuanced understanding of educational achievement, recognizing the importance of teacher development, adaptive learning strategies, and early intervention programs to support underserved students.
