VC Wiesbaden reaches round of 16 in the Challenge Cup
The volleyball players of VC Wiesbaden are through to the last 16 of the CEV Challenge Cup. The Hessians won their home match against Belgian representative Bevo Rekkenshop Roeselare on Wednesday evening with a commanding 3:0 (25:21, 25:19, 25:14). They had to do without their head coach Benedikt Frank, who was absent due to illness. Assistant coach Christian Sossenheimer was on the sidelines instead.
After the 3:1 away triumph in the first leg a week earlier, the hosts would have only needed to win two sets to progress in front of 850 spectators in their home sports hall at Platz der Deutschen Einheit, meaning they were able to celebrate after just two rounds. In the round of the best 16, the Bundesliga seventh-placed team will now face the winner of the clash between Galatasaray Istanbul and HPK Hämeenlinna from Finland. The Turkish club dominated the first encounter 3:0. The decision will be made on Thursday.
The victory in their home match against Bevo Rekkenshop Roeselare secured VC Wiesbaden's place in the Women's CEV Challenge Cup round of 16. In the upcoming round, they will face either Galatasaray Istanbul or HPK Hämeenlinna.
