Vatican relies on e-cars from Saxony

Electric cars from Saxony are now on the road in the service of the Holy See. Two ID.3 vehicles were handed over to Pope Francis this week. Both were manufactured in the Transparent Factory in Dresden, a spokesperson for Volkswagen Saxony said on Thursday in response to a question. The majority of the other ID.3, ID.4 and ID.5 vehicles destined for the Vatican, which will be delivered from the beginning of 2024, will be produced at the Zwickau site.

The Vatican wants to gradually replace its state vehicles with electric vehicles from the VW and Skoda brands. The entire vehicle fleet in the world's smallest state is to become CO2-neutral by 2030. According to Volkswagen, it will deliver almost 40 fully electric models at the beginning of 2024. Further zero-emission vehicles from the Group's brands will follow in later phases.

The Pope received two electric cars, made by Volkswagen in Saxony, to aid in the Vatican's environmental efforts. These environmentally friendly vehicles serve as part of the Holy See's goal to transition its entire fleet to carbon-neutral cars by 2030. Volkswagen's Zwickau site will manufacture the majority of the electric ID.3, ID.4, and ID.5 models bound for the Vatican, with plans to introduce nearly 40 fully electric models from various VW and Skoda brands by the start of 2024.
