Olympic champion Darja Varfolomeev consciously took an extra year of school to achieve the greatest sporting success of her career. "I've dedicated my whole life to this, I'm taking a year off school and will have to repeat the 10th grade," the 17-year-old told "Der Spiegel" in an interview. She became the first German in history to win gold in rhythmic gymnastics at the Olympic Games in Paris. "I could only believe it when I finished the last exercise with the ribbon and knew I hadn't made a big mistake." Varfolomeev trains in Schmiden, near Stuttgart.

Darja Varfolomeev's hard-won Olympic gold in rhythmic gymnastics made history, as she became the first German to achieve this feat in Paris. After her triumph, she continued her training in Schmiden, close to Stuttgart.
