- Van crashes into tree in Lebach - five seriously injured

All five occupants of a small transporter were severely injured in an accident in Lebach (district of Saarlouis). The vehicle, in the vicinity of the sports field, veered off the road and collided head-on with a tree, according to police. The 75-year-old driver, along with the 19, 23, 27, and 49-year-old passengers, sustained severe injuries and were hospitalized in several clinics in Saarland and one in Trier.

The vehicle belonged to a passenger transport company. Witness and passenger interviews suggest that a health issue with the driver likely caused the accident. No other vehicles were involved, and foul play is not suspected. The influence of alcohol or drugs is still under investigation.

The estimated damage to the small transporter is around 40,000 euros. Two rescue helicopters, five emergency doctors, six ambulances, and three fire department vehicles with ten personnel from Lebach were deployed. The road was closed for several hours.

The accident resulted in all occupants requiring hospitalization in multiple clinics. Efforts to determine if alcohol or drugs played a role in the incident are ongoing.
