Serious accident in Chemnitz - Van collides with streetcar - 63-year-old dead

After a collision with a tram, a small transit van overturned in Chemnitz and struck and killed a 63-year-old pedestrian. Six other people were partially injured in the accident, according to the police.

The 21-year-old driver of the transit van allegedly turned right at a crossing in the Altchemnitz district at noon despite a presumably red traffic light on the left. This resulted in the collision. The transit van skidded, collided a second time with the tram, hit a traffic light pole, and finally overturned onto the 63-year-old pedestrian who was waiting at the traffic light. The woman died at the scene of her injuries.

Her 61-year-old companion suffered a severe shock, while the 21-year-old driver sustained serious injuries. They were taken to the hospital for further treatment. The tram driver (57 years old), a passenger in the tram (48 years old), and two passengers in the transit van (11 and 37 years old) were treated for light injuries at hospitals.

The Traffic Accident Investigation Team of the Chemnitz Police Department has taken on investigations into the accident. In the course of the rescue and cleanup efforts, as well as the accident investigation, the city-bound lane of the Annaberger Straße was initially closed.

The collision on Annaberger Straße in Chemnitz's Altchemnitz district has brought significant traffic disruptions, causing delays for commuters in Saxony.

The Police Department in Saxony's Chemnitz has increased patrols in the area to prevent any further accidents due to the high volume of traffic diverted onto alternate routes.

The Streetcar service in the city has been affected by the accident, resulting in temporary adjustments to its schedule and routes.

Despite the tragedy and the subsequent investigations, the importance of adhering to traffic rules and signals has been emphasized, with a call for increased safety awareness among drivers and pedestrians.
