Vacations, commuters and drivers home: ADAC warns of traffic jams

A traffic jam instead of the anticipation of Christmas: on Friday, driving in Baden-Württemberg could often lead to a traffic jam. The ADAC warns of one section in particular.

Traffic - Vacations, commuters and drivers home: ADAC warns of traffic jams

In order to avoid a less than pleasant pre-Christmas treat on the roads, the ADAC advises drivers to plan ahead, especially on Friday - or be patient. This is because the automobile club in Baden-Württemberg is expecting the heaviest traffic congestion during the Christmas period on this day. "Anyone who can should not be on the Baden-Württemberg freeways next Friday," warned ADAC Württemberg on Monday.

The usual stream of commuters will coincide with holiday traffic on the day before the weekend, and the school vacations are also starting. The risk of traffic jams is particularly high on Friday afternoons and Saturday mornings, said Holger Bach, Head of the Traffic and Environment Department at ADAC Württemberg. The experts also expect full roads in the city centers on Saturday, when the Christmas market is visited again or the last Christmas present is bought.

It is less busy everywhere at Christmas. "The holidays are among the quietest days of the year in terms of road traffic," said Bach. Traffic will only pick up again on December 27, because many people are on their way home from relatives or leaving for their winter vacation.

According to the ADAC, the A81 between the Leonberg junction and the Weinsberg junction and the A5 in the Karlsruhe area are among the most congested routes in Baden-Württemberg during the Christmas period. "However, the biggest traffic jam remains the roadworks near Pforzheim on the A8," warns Bach. Last year, the section between Pforzheim-Süd and Pforzheim-Nord was the most congested section of highway in Germany according to the ADAC congestion statistics.

There is also a risk of traffic jams around Christmas on the A5 from Heidelberg to Karlsruhe, on the A6 from Heilbronn to Nuremberg and on the A7 from Würzburg via Ulm to Füssen/Reutte. Also on the ADAC's warning list are the A8 between Karlsruhe via Stuttgart to Munich, the A81 from Stuttgart to Singen and the greater Stuttgart area.

  1. Despite the heavy traffic anticipated on the Baden-Württemberg freeways, especially on Friday, commuters from Karlsruhe should consider using alternative modes of transport, such as electric trains or carpooling, to avoid the congestion.
  2. During the weekend, many people in Württemberg will be out shopping for last-minute Christmas presents or visiting local markets, leading to increased traffic and the potential for accidents involving cars.
  3. In a bid to reduce the risk of a sheet metal avalanche during the winter months, ADAC advises drivers to properly secure their load while traveling on the roads in Baden-Württemberg to avoid harm to other commuters.
  4. With the holiday season in full swing, many drivers returning from their weekend trips or winter vacations will be joining the usual flow of commuters, leading to heavy traffic and longer travel times on highways like the A5 and A81 in Baden-Württemberg.
  5. ADAC also suggests that drivers should follow the posted speed limits during the Christmas period in Baden-Württemberg to ensure safety on the roads and minimize the risk of accidents caused by traffic congestion and stressed commuters.
  6. To ensure a more pleasant Christmas holiday for all commuters, it is essential to spread awareness about the potential traffic congestions and plan accordingly, instead of relying on GPS systems that may not always provide accurate information or alternative routes.
