Cultural Institutions Showcasing Art and History - Utopia on Planet: Children's Biennale in Dresden's Baroque Palace
Children and renowned artists are turning the Japanese Palace in Dresden into a beacon of hope for nine months. The main theme of the third Children's Biennale of the State Art Collections (SKD) is visions of peace, unity, sustainability, and global justice, as well as tolerance and community. As curator Anna Aulich shared on Thursday, this exhibition is about shaping the world and making it a better place.
This unique undertaking is inspired by the innovative concepts dreamed up by 130 child juries of second to sixth graders from Elbe city schools. Their ideas about the future were shared, explored, and subsequently incorporated into the collections of the SKD.
"Planet Utopia," a vibrant and interactive exhibition, will be inaugurated with a grand celebration on International Children's Day (Saturday) with free admission. Filled with ten rooms from the 18th-century palace, visitors will encounter works of art that touch on feelings, empathy, natural wonders, social and political topics, and more. Interaction is a fundamental part of this experience.
Art installations include walls lined with circles waiting to be filled with drawn faces, an insect kingdom waiting to be activated, an underwater world crafted from plastic bottles with a giant squid, a scent memory, a paper sculpture spanning two rooms, and a wind-propelled sculpture surrounded by delicate fabric. In the Utopia Lab, ideas are collected, and there is a songwriting project centered on children's rights, as well as an exploration into the phenomenon of light pollution.
The exhibition is heavily integrated with educational programming, hands-on workshops, and activities for the youngest audience members. This international project joins forces with the National Gallery Singapore, the organization that initiated the Children's Biennale that served as the inspiration for its European counterpart.
Keep an eye out for the 2024/2025 Children's Biennale.
