US-Rapper Snoop Dogg applauded as Olympic Torchbearer in Paris suburb
Snoop Dogg will comment for NBC at the Olympic Games, which officially open on Friday. Among the torch bearers on the last day was also the former UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon.
Anticipation builds as to who will ultimately extinguish the Olympic flame at the end of the opening ceremony. In 1992, a paralympic Spanish archer ignited the Olympic flame in Barcelona in a spectacular way with an arrow shot. The method and by whom the fire will be lit this year remains a secret until the last minute.
Even the President of the International Olympic Committee Thomas Bach wanted to be surprised in the last minute. Speculation is over the three-time Olympic champion Marie-José Pérec. Names like Lilian Thuram or Zinedine Zidane are also mentioned.
Among the torch bearers were also the AFP photographer Christina Assi, who had one leg amputated after being injured in Lebanon, and the wheelchair-bound Kevin Piette, who moved with the help of an exoskeleton.
The Olympic flame, which arrived by boat in Marseille on May 8 and has been carried through the country since then, reached Paris early in the afternoon on a boat on the Canal Saint-Martin. Several million spectators followed the traditional torch relay.
