US President Biden's son convicted for unlawful firearm ownership by a jury.

In a groundbreaking trial, a US jury convicted the 54-year-old son of the sitting president on all three charges. These charges include the illegal possession of a revolver in 2018 (while under the influence of illicit drugs) and lying about his drug usage on the purchasing paperwork for the weapon.

With the potential for up to 25 years in prison, this is a serious conviction for Hunter Biden. However, as a first-time offender, he may face a more lenient sentence, with probation or community service being common outcomes.

Hunter's legal troubles are causing concern for President Biden, who is up for re-election this year. Public opinion could sway during this delicate time, especially as he also faces September charges for alleged tax evasion.

On the commencement of the trial, the President publicly expressed his love, trust, and respect for his son, stating: "as a father, I have boundless love for my son, trust in him, and respect for his strength." Meanwhile, First Lady Jill Biden attended various trial sessions, while the President decided to stay away from the proceedings.

Beating drug addiction, according to his own narrative, is something Hunter has achieved since 2019. In his self-written memoir, he details his crack and alcohol addiction in graphic terms. Hunter Biden is the offspring of former US President Joe Biden and his first wife Neilia, who died in a car accident in 1972, taking their one-year-old daughter, Naomi, with her. Despite surviving severely injured, his other son Beau died in 2015 from a brain tumor.

A longstanding target of his father's political opponents, Hunter Biden is not new to the scrutiny of the US Justice System. With a guilty verdict now in his record, the President worries how his son's situation may be exploited by his predecessor and possible re-election rival, Donald Trump, to divert public opinion from his own legal issues.

Trump became the first ex-US president to be convicted of a crime in May. A New York jury found him guilty of falsifying business documents covering up a hush-money payment to adult film actress Stormy Daniels before the 2016 elections. The sentence for Trump’s conviction will be handed down on July 11th.
