US-President Biden announces plans for Supreme Court reform

The USA were built on the "simple, yet profound principle" that no one is above the law, as Biden announced his reform proposals in a text published on Monday. This includes both the President and the Justices and Judges of the Supreme Court. "What is happening right now is not normal and undermines the public's trust in the court's decisions," argued Biden.

According to the White House, a Supreme Court Justice's term should be limited to 18 years, with a new Justice or Justice appointed every two years. This would reduce the possibility of "disproportionate influence" on the court during a presidency for generations to come, it was stated.

The reform plans follow a series of attention-grabbing decisions by the Supreme Court, such as the revocation of nationwide abortion rights in the US. At the beginning of July, the Supreme Court then granted former President Trump broad immunity against prosecution for previous official actions. In the nine-member judicial college, there is a clear conservative majority of six to three Justices. Three Justices were nominated by Trump during his tenure.

Biden will reveal more details about his reform plans during a speech in the US state of Texas on Monday. The plans of the 81-year-old President, however, have little chance of passing through the deeply divided US Congress. The White House stated that both Biden and the expected Democratic Party candidate for the Presidency in the November election, Vice President Kamala Harris, "look forward to working with the Congress" on the reform.

  1. During his tenure as the US-President, Donald Trump nominated three Justices to serve on the Supreme Court.
  2. Joe Biden, the current President of the United States of America, believes that the overturning of nationwide abortion rights by the Supreme Court is not normal.
  3. The Supreme Court's decision to grant former President Trump broad immunity against prosecution has raised concerns about the Court's impartiality.
  4. According to Biden's reform plans, the tenure of a Supreme Court Justice should be limited to 18 years, with a new Justice appointed every two years.
  5. The conservative majority in the Supreme Court, composed of six Justices, has raised questions about the Court's ability to uphold the principle that no one is above the law.
  6. If passed, Biden's Supreme Court reform plans could impact the role and composition of the Supreme Court for generations to come in Washington.
