US Journalist Gershkovich sentenced to 16 years in Russian penal colony

The indictment demanded 18 years of imprisonment in a penal colony during the trial. The prosecutor accused Gershkovich of working for the US intelligence service CIA and gathering secret information about a tank manufacturer in the Urals. The defendant denied all the accusations, as did the US government and his employer.

Gershkovich was the first Western journalist to be arrested in Russia since the end of the Cold War on charges of espionage. He has been in pre-trial detention at the Lefortovo Prison in Moscow since March 2023. At the time of his arrest, the reporter was on a research trip to the city of Yekaterinburg, located east of the Ural Mountains, where his trial is now taking place.
