Voting Contests - Upcoming vote for mayor of Saarlouis's seat.
Two candidates, Florian Schäfer (SPD) and Marc Speicher (CDU), will go head-to-head in the runoff for the mayor's position of the town of Saarlouis in Saarland. In the initial vote on Sunday, neither candidate gathered the required majority of votes.
Once the votes were counted, Schäfer led with 42.99% while Speicher had 42.03%. In the conclusion of the race, they will battle it out on the 23rd of June. The other candidates, Gudrun Bierbrauer-Haupenthal from the FDP and the AfD state chairman Carsten Becker, have now been eliminated.
58.9% of the eligible voters participated in the elections. The current mayor, Peter Demmer (SPD), chose not to seek re-election for age-related reasons. The city of Saarlouis has a population of approximately 37,000 inhabitants.
