Upcoming state elections in Saxony: AfD leads CDU in latest surveys
Compared to the previous January survey by MDR, the Alternative for Germany (AfD) saw a drop of five points, while the Christian Democratic Union (CDU) lost just one. The coalition partners of the CDU, the Social Democrats (SPD) and the Greens, are expected to maintain their seven percent each.
The new alliance led by Sahra Wagenknecht, BSW, is garnering substantial support. According to MDR's survey, BSW could potentially secure a 15% share, marking a seven-point increase since the establishment of the BSW state association. As things stand, the Left party would be absent in the Dresden state parliament, sitting at 3%.
Given the current circumstances, a state government led by the CDU would necessitate new party alliances and would not be achievable without the involvement of BSW. In terms of a possible direct election, the incumbent Minister President, Michael Kretschmer, is a clear favorite, with 58% of interviewees planning to vote for him. The AfD's candidate, Jörg Urban, would only receive 17% of the vote.
An Insa survey published in the "Sächsische Zeitung", the "Leipziger Volkszeitung" and the "Freien Presse" also showed the AfD in the lead, with 32%, while the CDU trailed closely behind at 30%.
The BSW also secured 15% in this survey. The remaining parties need to be concerned about making it into the parliament on September 1st. The Greens and SPD came in at 5% each, while the Left party stands at 4%, followed by the currently unrepresented Free Democrats (FDP) at 2%.
