Minister of Health - Up to telephone sick leave: protection and relief

Rhineland-Palatinate Health Minister Clemens Hoch (SPD) has welcomed telephone sick notes as protection and relief for the medical profession. "Sick notes by telephone have already proven their worth during the coronavirus pandemic, as doctors were able to write off their patients without having to put them in a full waiting room with symptoms," the minister said in Mainz on Thursday. It is important to use all possibilities to separate mild and severe cases of illness, to reduce contacts where possible and at the same time to relieve the burden on medical staff.

According to the Joint Federal Committee of doctors, health insurance companies and clinics, the nationwide regulation applies with immediate effect. According to the information, it applies to patients who are known to the respective doctor's practice and who do not have severe symptoms. Another prerequisite is that video consultations are not possible. Doctors can then issue a certificate of incapacity to work for a maximum of five days. During the coronavirus crisis, there was already a special regulation for sick leave by telephone that was extended several times. It expired in the spring.
