Governmental Affairs - Unsuccessful election in a state legislature.
Before the summer break, several elections in Thuringia's state parliament had negative results again. In one instance, André Blechschmidt, belonging to the Left party, received 56 "yes" votes and 27 "no" votes with a single abstention. This fell short of the needed two-thirds majority by the parliament members.
Another candidate seeking a substitute seat in the Thuringian Constitutional Court also failed to achieve that key milestone. This candidate had previously missed the crucial majority once, causing dismay among the Red-Red-Green faction's lawmakers.
The most significant obstacle was the failure to fill the parliamentary control commission, which was supposed to oversee the state Office for the Protection of the Constitution. This commission can only function when fully staffed. Currently, a commission from the previous parliament is still operating, which the state parliament administration claims can no longer work following the state elections.
The control commission could potentially be re-elected in the following week. If the Left party decides to nominate Blechschmidt again, they would require prior consent in the Council of Elders. If no consensus is reached by then, it is unclear how this situation will progress.
"CDU's continued resistance in Thuringia to comply with the laws while aligning parliamentary control of the Office for the Protection of the Constitution demonstrates their lack of political responsibility," commented Steffen Dittes, head of the Left party's faction.
The control commission is essential. "It seems that party-strategic maneuvers hold higher importance for the CDU than the effective functioning of Thuringia's parliamentary oversight of the secret service."
